For more than 120 years, bamboo crafts specialized shop called "Taketora" (竹虎) has broaden their name nationwide. It is the place you must go and see if you are staying Kochi.
Quality and wide range of bamboo crafts are not the only reason why they have gained high reputation but the bamboo they use is special, some call it a miracle. The bamboo they use is no ordinary, called "Torafudake" (虎斑竹), looks like pattern of tiger (虎), only grow in limited area of Kochi. Many attempts to move Torafu bamboo to other region of Japan and plant there, has no success confirmed.
Taketora produce hundreds bamboo products using many kinds of bamboos, Torafu, Kuro, Moso, and others. Each bamboo has distinctive quality. For example, Kuro bamboo is slim but durable. Moso grows till very thick and big but keep its toughness due to fine fiber. Some other type of bamboo cannot keep its toughness when they grow to certain size.
