Denim wear by Canton Overalls

PIONEER OF JAPANESE JEANS, "CANTON OVERALLS". THE HIGHEST COMMITMENT FOR EXTRA EXCEED DENIM.

In 1963, "Canton" (キャントン) started producing jeans with imported genuine U.S. made material (Canton cotton mills), TALON zips and SCOVILL rivets. Nearly half a century later, in 2008, the company changed its name to "Canton Overalls". Now, jeans of Canton Overalls is No.1 products that there are few men but know that.

But, the business had been nothing but a struggle since its foundation. Due to the trademark right, just 4 years later from their very first day, they were not allowed to use the name "Canton". The founder of "Canton" in Japan, "Oishi" (大石) continued jeans making by under new name, "Big Stone" (大 = big, 石 = stone). They even managed to revive vintage line of Canton in 1991 but went bankruptcy in 2003.

Today, the business was taken over by current company, "Toyoshima" (豊島株式会社), specialist in fabric industry.

The quality and soul of Canton, as a whole, were inherited by Toyoshima and top quality jeans wear is made, with pride.

You should be able to tell the difference between mass produced "jeans" and true jeans with soul of craftsmanship as soon as you take them in your hands and feel its texture.

Belt loops. Sewed precisely. Only these parts are sewed by overlock machine.

Canton 1963XX (Extra Exceed) is based on 501XX of sometime around 1940 to 1950s. Using 12oz unwashed denim, creates beautiful mottle pattern which is the main feature of vintage denims.

Overlock sewing machine is not used, expect for belt loops. The sewing threads are intentionally left uncut for both ends.

The person in charge of Canton Overalls says "We are very proud of our product. So proud that you can wear them even inside-out."

Silhouette of inside is beautiful as is, outside.

The hem is finished with chainstitch.

#1963-105

Price: ¥35,640

The difference between new and nicely aged jeans. The comparison is made with aged sample which is familiarized for 500 days. (Big thanks to Mr. Sato who sent me this valuable jeans.) The color and texture is nicely aged but durability of denim was almost the same as new product even worn for 1.5 year.

Aging of front button plating.

Aging of belt loops.

It is recommended to leave sewing thread as they are. After a certain period, they become cool as they get.

The best feature of Canton's jeans may be its durability. Unlike other mass produced jeans-like wears, they becomes tightened to fit your body. So Canton jeans will become a part of yourself, literally.

New unwashed jeans on the left. Aged on the right.

In a way, the color become darker.

Silhouette is sharper.
