OKINAWA'S STAPLE SOUVENIR, "BENI-IMO" TARTE REVIEW.
Beni-imo tarte is one of the most popular, staple souvenir and there are so many to choose from. Since beni-imo (purple yam) is Okinawa's local speciality, many companies are making sweets made of it.
Out of many purple yam sweets, I happened to get "Beni-imo tarte" (紅芋タルト) by a company called Pineapple house (パイナップルハウス).
Here's my review. Hope this will help your choice-making on souvenir from Okinawa.

Black and gold designed box is luxury. The package looks promising.
Ingredients:
Purple yam paste (purple yam, sugar), wheat flour, bean paste (white bean paste, sugar, purple yam paste, salt), margarine, sugar, egg (chicken), malt sugar, sugar, reduced starch syrup, purple yam syrup (sugar / purple yam), Salt, chlorella extract, (including wheat · milk ingredients · egg · soybeans in part)
What I like about this sweets is that no preservative and coloring are used. Let me open the box. Getting excited.
Inner package is also luxury. I expect of you, Beni-imo!
These individually package has oxygen absorber. Avoid high temperature and humidity, they should last for 2 weeks.
One is cut in half. Vivid purple without coloring is amazing.
Tarte dough which I expected to be firm, crispy was opposite. Soft and crumbly texture.
Took a bite. Flavor of purple yam which is mixture of sweetness and potato will be the first thing spreads in mouth. Right after, powdery taste of the dough follows. It tastes natural, not too sweet.
Purple yam has plenty of polyphenols and dietary fiber. So, if you like healthy sweets, this is recommended.
But mouth WILL get dry. (Black coffee was perfect accompany for me.)
