Hiyoko sable by Yoshinodo
CHICK CHICK CHICK! HIYOKO!
Hiyoko is a word for a chick. Hiyoko shaped shortbread and manju made by Yoshinodo are well made sweets that should make folks back home really happy.
The reason why I recommend these sweets is because some wagashi may not be well accepted by non-Japanese, especially if someone receiving the souvenir is picky about food. Ingredients used in wagashi, in some cases, may be too Japanesy.
There is no worry about it for Yoshinodo Hiyoko sweets. They are yummy, really yummy.

Sable is originally a French word for biscuits. These are sweets that reminds me of my grandma, used to buy me a box of Hiyoko sable every time visited her home. (Thanks grandma.)
These lovely shaped sable not only reminds me a good old times, but also tastes just as great still now. Pleasant smell of butter, that is produced in Hokkaido, lead mild but just right amount of sugar with very very crispy texture won't make you stop.

A word manju may not explain this wonderful sweet perfectly. It has a slight difference from other manju because bun (skin) is slowly roasted and jam inside is used kidney beans and egg yolk.
Soft and thin bun fits with thick mellow jam.
